If you are renting a canoe in Kolovesi we send you separate instructions where to pick up the canoe. The canoe rent includes paddle, life vest, one barrel or dry bag/person, a map and spray deck for kayaks.
Please check the gear before you start your trip and inform us immediately if you notice any defects
After your trip please clean the canoe from sand and litter and return it to the same place where you took it. Never leave the canoe in the water. Make sure that all the hatch covers of the kayak are returned. If you have lost a hatch cover please let us know immediately because it is a security risk to paddle without hatch covers. Keep the hatches closed so that they are not filled with water if it is raining,
In Oravi return the paddles and other paddling gear to the reception. Also return the map. In case the reception is already closed you can leave the gear on the terrace. In Kolovesi return all the gear to the locked shed.
Please tell the staff in the reception that you have returned.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Choose a kayak that is suitable for your size and paddling experience.
Do not pull or drop the kayak on the rocks. There are also plenty of rocks in the water so be careful in shallow waters. If you hit a rock you can damage the kayak or the rudder/fin
Never carry a kayak from the ropes. Always carry the kayak holding on to the body of the kayak. Avoid carrying the kayak when it is fully loaded because the weight can damage the bottom of the kayak.
Do not remove the deck cords. If you adjust the seat or the pedals make sure that you do not lose any screws or nuts.

KAYAKS WITH RUDDERS OR SKEGS
Always lift up the rudder of skeg in shallow waters and before going ashore. The rudder or skeg is easily damaged in shallow waters. Do not pull a kayak with a skeg on a sandy beach because the case is filled with sand and the skeg is blocked.
Do not remove the rudder or make any nots to the cords.

SAFETY
Before you leave, check out the current weather forecast and pay attention to the wind. Do not plan a trip that is too long or demanding according to your paddling skills and the weather.
Always wear a life vest. Always pack extra clothes, also on a day trip. The weather conditions might change quickly.
Make sure that the hatch covers of the kayak are closed and wear a spray deck.
Reserve enough drinks and food for your trip.
Avoid paddling on the fairways for motor boats – cross the fairway at a narrow point and as fast as possible. Note that the boat driver might not see between the waves or if the sun is blinding.

Water responsibility and tour etiquette

Clean water and diverse lake nature is a condition of life for us. We hope that everyone that visit us and those living in the area respect nature and act responsibly. We have prepared our own responsible hiking guide for kayakers and canoers. Metsähallitus has created an outdoor etiquette that includes e.g. instructions for respecting nature, camping, making a fire and camping without trash. The outdoor etiquette in short:

1. Respect nature - leave no trace in it. Keep your pets on a leash.
2. Mainly use marked trails and follow the rules for different modes of travel. Check the areas and times in which access is possibly restricted at your destination.
3. Camp only where it is allowed. Do not wash the dishes or yourself directly in a water body. Follow the rules of wilderness huts.
4. Light your campfire only where it is allowed and use a camping stove where possible. Do not light a fire when a forest or grass fire warning is in effect.
5. Do not litter.
